When you take down the crossmember do you need to support the transmission? I would hate to take it off only for the transmission to fall on my face.
No, you don't. The tranny is bolted to the engine, and the motor mounts will hold it all up. It will drop down, so don't lay under it when you lower it, but its not going to fall on the ground. You shouldn't have problems w/ the distributer hitting the firewall either. I have the large coil-in-cap HEI and it has plenty of clearance when I let my tranny hang. You will need a jack to put the crossmember back in though.

I can lower my trans with out removing the distributor too but I have the HEI with the remote coil. But I have to unbolt the distributor and turn the connections for the ignition module away from the firewall first to keep them from hitting.

How do most people lift the car to do the fluid and filter change? I was thinking of using ramps on the front wheels and that would give me enough room.
