why wont it kick down?
i just had a 79 350 put in my t/a, i had alot of problems with it not kicking down before the swap when i had a 305. i got the problem fixed by adjusting the detent cable and gettin a tv cable corrector, now the problem is back, you stomp it and instead of shifting and taking off it just sits and reves really high and then finally shifts. i have a 600 cfm carb with a stock detent cable. the tranny is a 700 r4. do i need to get a different detent cable or what? where do you get them? i called the gm dealer about it and he didnt know anything about it. thanks
Curtis I'll try to help you're list of problems.First buy a Haynes or Chiltons manual on you're car.I have one on every car I've ever owned.You're dad said you're detent cable was too long.You need one from a 305 carbed 3rd gen,You're car originally was 305 computer controlled Q-jet so you should have the rite detent cable unless someone changed it before you bought the car.
They were different between carbed,TBI, andTPI.As far as Cooling go's first get a air dam.Air flowing under you're car hits the dam and is reflected up into the radiator.You have a belt driven clutch fan and cruisein around town it pulls air thru the radiator but when you get on the open road like the interstate your motor spins faster and the clutch fan wont pull as much air but you'll be going faster and more air hits the air dam and go's thru the radiator therefore you don't need the fans help as much as you do at lower speeds but you have no air dam to catch the air flowing under the car so it just flows under you're car and doesn't make it's way up into the radiator.Also a 160 deg. thermostat will help some what.Get one from your local parts place AutoZone,Pep Boys where ever.You don't need a high dollar one.One thats just a stock replacement for you're 180 deg. one will work fine. If you need a higher flowing one later just pull the 160 out and drill a couple 1/16 holes thru it.I put one in my Iroc because it wanted to stay around 200 degrees even with a Griffen radiator,and a 160 deg. thermostat got it down to the 180-185 degree area.Later when you can afford it I'ed change to an electric fan set up.
