Auto to Manual Conv. Wiring to start
Auto to Manual Conv. Wiring to start
I have almost completed converting from an 700-r4 to a t5 manual transmission. (1984 z-28)
I cannot get the starter to crank.
I know that there are wires that were wired to the Auto to not let you start unless you are in PARK or NEUTRAL. Your tech Article makes referece to finding 2 wires to wire to clutch, but doesn't give enough information for me to confidently ID such wires.
Q1) Do I need to somehow "Fool" the car into thinking it is in PARK or NEUTRAL by wiring together some of the many wires I have laying that connected to the old Automatic shifter, or will finding the clutch wires and connecting it to the switch work by itself?
Q2) What color, location, or other method do I use to find the clutch wires?

I haven't checked my car to see if its there, but I have been told that there is a connector up by the pedals for the clutch safety switch even on automatic cars. On a manual, there is a switch mounted on the pedals so you can start the car only when you press the clutch. There are two different types....one is a push-type, the other a pull-type. Either would be fine.
Your options are to either
1) Find the connector for the switch on your car (if its there already) and put in the switch (Its like $12 new from GM).
2) Run two wires to the pedals from the two thickest wires that used to go to the shifter. On my car they were purple and green. I believe on your 84 they are purple and yellow. Then hookup those wires to the sensor.
3) You could just put in a piece of wire across the two terminals for the two wires at the connector that went to the automatic shifter. The car will start like that...HOWEVER....this defeats the whole purpose of having the switch. The car can start even if its in gear this way, and thats not a good thing.
If you want to see where it mounts... go to a junkyard, and take a look around at a manual car. Trying to explain it would be really confusing.

Look at the 6 pin connector that goes to the auto tranny shifter...
There should be two larger wires that stand out...yellow and purple I believe.....these need to be connected together or connected to a safety switch on the clutch pedal (to prevent you from starting your car with the lcutch out).
The other four smaller wires in that connector is for the reverse lights and I believe for the TCC.

Thank you Frobozz,
I will look at that connector. Your information makes me think of another problem I forgot.
With a manual transmission, how do I wire up the back up Lights ?
Or more specifically, to what do I wire the back up lights?

Of the four small wires, two are for the reverse lights, and the other two are for the hatch motor. Whichever two are shorted when the neutral safety switch is in the reverse position, those are for your reverse lights. You need to run two wires from there to a connector on the side of your tranny.
