wanna change my 700r4 trans mission over to a manual what do i have to have
i have a 1991 z28 camaro witha 5.7 liter engine. my trany is slipping and has been for a while. i have a manual out of an older firebird that had a 2.8 liter, will it work the firebird was fuel injected. i think a manual will set this car on fire but i have to know what to have, any advice is welcome.

I do not know much about transmissions but I do know that you will not be able to bolt up ANY T-5 with an L98. There is a reason why that specific engine only came mated to a TH700-R4, and that is: THe TH700-R4 was the only available transmission to handle the amount of torque put forward by torquey L98. V6 and V8 trans have different bellhousings from what I hear, you might want to look into a T-56 out of a fourthgen, you'll get 6 gears, all of which are of good ratio, and they can handle the torque of an LS1, so you know that you should be good to go. Just a heads up, good luck with your project.

Actually a few L98s did come with T-5s.. at very very special request.. we're talkin 3-5 units.
The V6 T-5 is not suitable.. your chances of finding the right clutch for the V6 T-5's 14 spline input shaft to mate up with the L98 flywheel are slim... Had a friend who put one behind a 406 poncho, but I can still barely believe he didn't grenade it in a week.
I would have to agree with PimpRod... look into the T-56. They're bulletproof (rated 450 ft-lbs tq stock if I remember correctly) compared to the T-5, and that .5:1 6th gear is a godsent for highway mileage.
If you don't know well enough to not try to stick a v6 transmission behind a v8, I wouldn't suggest trying to rebuild your slushbox yourself.. just an opinion on that note.

I wouldn't waste my time with the T5 as chances are you won't be the lucky one to have one hold up behind a 5.7. I would go with a T56 and depending how mechanical incline you are will determine if you can install it yourself or not. The T56 is definetely the way to go with the best of both worlds. It has a nice .50 overdrive for fuel economy and is near bullet proof for what street motors dish at it.
