Will high speeds affect my 700-R4

Hey guys,
When I am on the highway, I like to get where I am going. WHen I am on the highway sometimes I reach speeds of like 87, and I was wondering, do high speeds affect my transmission? Do not get my wrong about the high speeds because the speed limits are 65 around here and everbody does pretty much what I do, which is not care. I have a radar detector and everything, now alls I am worried about is will my transmission's life be shortened when driving faster? Thanks.

IMO, speed doesn't = transmission wear. At least to a point that it's worth worrying about.

Okay, so if I push my engine to say 4500 in gear my transmission isn't going to get revenge on me?

With your set-up that would be the least of my worries.

So when it goes, it was its time to go? What I should be asking is, what kind of stuff should I not be doing to keep my trans in good working order, I know you have to change filter and fluid every 30k, and burnouts are a no no, but wut else?

I have a 350 and now I'm curious.
About how bad are burnouts for a transmission?
I have long known they're not good per say, but are they really that bad?

hmmm in my opinion i wouldnt ever change the tranny fluid... i would change the filter and add a little extra every once in a while. Everybody i know whos chaged their tranny fluid... their tranny shifts like crap afterwards.... ur original tranny fluid is like soaked into the clutches in ur trans (so ive been told by a few ppl) and if you change the fluid it should be at re-build when changing the clutches also.

HEAT kills the transmission more then anything else and burnouts are a Big generater of heat and other stresses. Also I would change the fluid, fliter on a regular basis depending on use.

dont ever think about not changing the fluid. My mom never did in her car and i decided to change it after she complainded of shifting problems and that junk was as thick as gear oil and it was jet black from never being changed. The fluid breaks down after a while and forms varnish... Not changing your fluid is BAD. Changing at the recommended service intervals is GOOD.

i tried to break my 700r4 in my 1988 formula 350, the whole car had 118,000 miles on it, and i constantly did burnouts and wot's!!! it took roughly 20,000 miles of daily driver abuse!!! before the drive to od started to slip alittle bit.. i mean i would always manually shift and do overdrive stomps and i then started to have a problem..

i just killed my 700R4..... like his, it had 118k on it to start with and wow, it lasted for another whopping 6k and it worked nicely when i got it. Guess all that fun with the new parts was more then it could take. Now it shifts terribly and it wont hold first gear at all under power.

Hey all you never change tranny fluid people. Here is what the story is. By saying it shifted like crap or died shortly after, you are telling us you did not change the fluid at the correct time! What happens is dirt gets into the system, then it gets ground into the system and becomes part of the structure to the system, almost a glue if you will. When you change the trans fluid, the dirt gets washed out of those parts and back into the tranny fluid, and the "glue" os gone, now the thing shifts like crap or even dies on you. I believe the service manual says to change the fluild every 20-30,000 miles. Even if you didnt change the fluid at the correct time, say you bought the car with 48,000 miles on it and figure well the next scheduled change is 60,000 so you wait until then now the trans fluid has 60,000 miles on it. For most of us finding a 3rd gen w/ 48,000 miles is a dream come true, its more likely you will find one with oh say about 100,000 miles on it, so the next scheduled time is 120,000 so now the trans fluid has 120,000 miles on it and dirt is literally holding the trans togather, you decide you are going to do your new baby a favor and get on the maintinance schedule, you change the fluid and immedieatly notice its shifting poorly, a week later it is slipping, a week later your pump is dead, a week later the car is making some horrible noise and won't move. Now you know why. It will last longer, and shift better longer if you follow the schedule, maybe even if you change it say every 20,000 miles, I cant see how this would hurt.
All you filter guys: Have you seen your trans filter? Its a screen, not some high density small particle filter, its made to catch the big stuff....only....unless you have had a major component fail and make realitivily speaking, large pieces go into the fluid your trans filter does nothing. It's almost not worth bothering! I chnaged the filter on my cavilier with a friend once....he's a pretty good mechanic. He asked me why I was bothering and explained what I just said up there. Then he showed me. I had him change it anyways since we already spent money on the filter....

heh... when i first got the car i changed the fluid + filter and even flushed out the tc... Guess thats what happens when you buy someone elses problem. Worked for a while but it gradually started to run worse and worse.

yes, thats what I did to mine.....the car had 80,000 miles and original fluid. Did that thing where they run the car so it pumps the fluid out itself and they put in the new fluid. About a month later the pump gave out, and when 1 part in an auto tranny goes, you can be sure it damaged other things.....that was a $2000 mistake.....now that its died again, I have learned another $2000 mistake, never ever ever ever ever under any circumstances take your car to AAMCO they suck, and I heard theres a class action lawsuit against them for just putting used transmissions in cars.....so now I'm going t-56 I'll have much more fun w/ a trans rated to 450 ft-lbs of torque lol.

AAMCO Anyone wanting to be listed first in the Yellow Pages of the phone book for a Auto repair is VERY suspect.

Well, I was suspicious, but to be honest, after talking with all the shops in my area that did trans work they were the *MOST* reputable/least willing to rip me off! I know that is hard to believe but this is the same area that I took my car to 4 different shops for inspection and got 4 different things wrong with my car....none of the mentioned items were bad...they also pulled my smog pump for the emmissions test so that my car wouldn't pass NOX....to their great surprise though I had the emissions stuff serviced only a year before so I still passes by a point (That was for CARB emmissions which certain counties in PA make you pass). So believe me it was like trying to pick the lesser of several evils. Oh well, the t-56 is sitting in a box in my car now waiting for the other parts for install so I can get it up and running....oh well, I'm rambling again...

So, from what I gather from reading all these posts:

A: Change your tranny filter and fluid at the recommended intervals.

B: If you miss an interval, just wait until the next one

C: If you have a high mileage used vehicle with questionable sevice history, do not change fluid as you will then have muck floating around killing your tranny.

Does that pretty well sum up all the previous posts?

I have a VERY high mileage 87 Z28 with the 700R4. I've only put 4500 miles or so on it, but I was thinking of changing the fluid and filter and maybe putting some type of restorative in it. I guess I oughta just ride it till it dies instead, eh?
