hard shift into drive?

I have a 86 camaro with a 89 l98 corvette engine and a 700r4. I just tightened the detent cable a little bit and now everytime i shift into drive the whole car jumps. The shifts are harder but feel normal. Is something wrong?

Why did you tighten the "detent" cable? Line pressure increases w/ TV Cable movement. Hence higher throttle openings, the more line pressure. Try setting it to stock specifications and see if it goes away. If you don't know how to adjust it, do a search on TV Cable adjustment. Everybody swears by TransfixLeo's method.

the cable had been too loose to open the throttle body. We tightened the cable until it had no slack.

Too loose to open the throttle body? The TV Cable aka "detent" cable doesn't open the throttle body, the opening of the throttle body moves the cable. You need to start from scratch w/ PROPER adjustment of the TV Cable.

i know that the TV cable was too loose before because the transmission was not shifting quick like it is now. The only problem is the hard shift into drive i have never had this problem in the past with other cars.

'82-'86 700R-4 trannies lacked a foward clutch accumulator, so harsh engagements into Drive were normal. A TV Cable that is to tight will only aggrivate the concern. If any of your "other" cars had an '87 or later 700R-4, its not a fair comparison.

Like I said before, I would make sure the cable is adjusted to SPECS, then re-evaluate.
