what spline is my 1982's rear?

Was wondering if anyone can tell me what spline is in my 1982 trans am. I think its a 3.73 posi. I want to put a newer rear in with a better gear ratio for highway cruising and I think they changed the spline after a certain year. Anyway if you know please post. Also what exactly is the spline? would I need a new driveshaft if I got a new rear?

Thanks

I believe the earlier years like yours had 26 spline, and in i think 89 the rear went to 28 spline.

Sorry, meant to answer the whole question in one post. The spline is the number of splines on the axles and in the carrier. Changeing gears has no effect on the spline. You would only have to worry about that if you were changing axles or carrier. Hope this helps.

that is the part that the ring gear sits in, also the axles "plug" into it. The actual rear end is just a shell, you add a pinion gear and carrier (with all its parts) to make the differential.

So are drive shafts interchangable from transmission to transmission and from rear to rear from 82-92?

Not sure if they ever changed the spline count on driveshafts, if not they should interchange.

I think the driveshafts are all interchangable throughout the years of the third gen.

if its stock..it aint 3.73s... 3.23 was the lowest gearset you could get in 82.

and 26 spline is right.

i have a th350 with 3.23s and i cruise 65 at 3k rpms

hmmm, you may be right. I was going off of something I remember reading in a dealer booklet from 1982 a while ago. I thought it said that one of the features of the ws6 was a 3.73 rear ratio. I'll try to find that booklet again and double check. If your engine is doing 3k at 65-70mph with 3.23's then your probably right. Guess that means I might put a 700-r4 in instead. By the way nice '82

THAT IS ONE DAMN NICE TRANSAM!!!!!!!! omg probably the nicest 82-84 ive seen. hehe my other transam had that very same red/black paint scheme.

yeah i'll be swapping over to a t56 this fall... i converted my red 82 over to 700r4...not that difficult but you'll need to mod the frame rails.

btw thank you for the compliment...

Hey Markb what type of modifications did you have to make to your frame rails in order to accept a 700r-4? Oh yeah and here is another pic.

well... i got a crossmember from a 89 transam with the 700r...and the rearward most bolt holes for the crossmember in the frame...will line up and perfectly bolt up to the crossmembers forward most holes...then...what i did was mark off the crossmember's rearward bolt holes and drilled the new holes in the frame, then i took a hole saw...and drilled out the SIDE of the frame...so it lined up with the bolt hole...so i could use a nut/bolt combo...made it SO much easier to wiggle my hands in there and start the nut on the bolt...thats all it took...had the tranny in within an hour...peice of cake job actually..if you need clearer instructions/drawing or a rough sketch..let me know..glad to help you out...

btw that car is so beautiful man!!!

Thanks for the compliment!

Actually I was wondering if you had to make any changes to the center console/shifter. Being that the 700r4 is a 4-speed and the old 200-c is a 3? I guess I'm wondering if the "D" position will still be drive or will it be overdrive, or if the "2" position is now drive and the "D" is overdrive... that kinda thing. I hope that made sense... I have a 700r4 in my basement and I have been meaning to put it in but the swap is a little daunting to me. Ive never swaped a tranny or an engine for that matter.

Heres another question for ya: How do you get the 4th gear to lockup? since the computer is only setup for a 3 speed

Yep, the 700r4 swap is worth it!! I installed aftermarket 3.73's and without overdrive it was revving pretty high down the highway. Your computer 'may' still handle the lock-up. It doesn't know if you have a 3 or 4 speed tranny, it just locks the converter when the conditions are right. Or you could install an aftermarket non-computer 700r4 lock-up kit. TCI, B&M, Painless, etc... Or you just put in a manual switch. For the crossmember mods, I took a different route. I cut up the original crossmember, moving the center of it back a couple of inches, and welded and reinforced it. Installed a Megashifter to handle the extra gear.

only two wires for lockup, easy, and summit seolls lockup wire kit for not bad price,

ive got an 82 trans am also,

its LG4, 200c, and 3.23 or 3.08- i have no idea what ratio it is yet, and the original power bulge hood even- still in perfect shape,

car is painted '70 or so chrysler purple haze,i plan on ditching the fresh rebuilt 200 for a th350 longtail and buildign an 86 LG4 from a station wagon into an L69 with summit 9.16CR pistons(58cc 22601 heads)

ill worry about rear axle ratio and pass side fender at a later point, the car has issues with the rear wheel arches so its just gonna be beat on and railed hard... but the doors are mint and shut tight like brand new, so hmm..

good luck

Anyone used one of those tranny rebuild videos? They sell them specifically for the 700r4. Thought it might be good to do a rebuild before installing it.

umm why use a long tail trans? you need a short shaft th350 to work in your car...your stokc driveshaft will work perfectly.
