tranny question

Hey all, I just got my tranny rebuilt and even though its new and we checked to see if there were any metal shavings (which there weren't) I am wodnering why the thing shifts so danged hard. My dad says thts normal for these kind of cars, but I'm a bit skeptical.....any ideas? thanks!

More than likey, they either put in a B&M Kit, or there "homebrew" kit. Neither one desirable. I have seen "new" rebuilds have 9/16" nuts from the hardware store installed in place of the accumulator springs. Very poor workmanship.

Well, there is a "firm" shift, which is desirable, and as torque increases on the transmission, a firmer shift is needed to make the shift with little or no slip in the tranny to prolong the life, however, there is a point where the shift becomes too firm, or "harsh". A hard shift can cause excessive strain on the tranny. The only time you really need a tranny to shift hard, is on a drag race only tranny that sees gobs of power. Its overkill on a street tranny. Its a common misconception that a tranny is judged on shift harshness. I'm not saying that your tranny is doomed, but I would try and find out why if shifts like it does and start considering your options of rectifying it.

Two options, either take the thing apart and check the rebuild, or drive around until it screws up!

Do you know anyone with a similar car with the same tranny? Compared to my old TH350, the 700R4 does shift harder (did from day one). If you know someone who could take you for a short ride in their car, or better, let you drive it a short distance, you could compare your shifts to their's and see if yours really is that hard of a shift.

well I do know someone that has a 91 RS which im assuming has the same tranny...maybe I could take it out for a spin to see?

one problem iwth that, when this tranny was about gone, it shiften REALLY smooth till it got worse, then it slipped.....maybe its just the tranny eh? I know a few people that used to work on cars that says thats the case :-) hopefully it is!
