700-R4 trans upgrade questions

i have an 85 iroc-z with a 305ci engine and a 700-R4 trans. i want to get a b&m shift improver kit and put a new torque convertor on it. i was wondering about the installation of the new torque convertor. after i drop the trans, the only thing i have to do is unbolt the old convertor and bolt up the new one? is the installation of the convertor that simple? also, what stall speed should i try to get for the new convertor?

I too have a 85 TPI 305 with 700r-4 and Corvette servo. Been reading lotsa good things about using the S-10 torque converter (#24202310). This is available for around $175.00 +$35.00 core.
The stall speed of this converter is around 2150 or so. Our stock converter is low, at least mine is. It feels like 1200 max. I'm considering this mod, and would like to hear comments from others who have tried it.

700r4 torque converter

One note about your post. You need to unbolt the torque converter from the flex plate before taking the tranny out. The tool guys have a nice tool that you can turn your flex plate with so you can get all three bolts out. It is possible to do by bumping the starter motor and hoping the flex plate stops in the right place but I sure prefer the tool. I got mine from the Snap-on guy but Mac and Matco also have them.
Here's the Snap-on one:

That one is like $18 from them.

This is the one I have and I like it:

It's $67.90. Here's the link to their catalog for this one:

Now, to confuse the topic. I talked to a hi-perf tranny shop today. He said the S-10 torque converter will not work correctly with the 700R-4's from the 1985 or so era. Although these trannys are 30 spline, apparently the S-10 converter uses a slightly different lock-up assembly . Therefore, this torque converter, while it will physically FIT the 700R-4's from then, is not the "correct" application for this tranny. Also, the Corvette torque converter for the 85 700R-4 is no longer available from GM. I checked with both a performance oriented Chevy dealer near me, and GM parts direct online. Comments?
