Removing 700R4 - can't get torque arm out!

I am just about ready to drop the trans and only have the torque arm (TA) and trans-to-engine bolts to remove. I have a BMR adjustable torque arm that I can't seem to remove from the trans. I have removed the nuts from the 3 bolts at the trans for the TA bracket and I can slide the TA assembly to the driver's side only about half way out...Then it gets stuck against the trans tunnel about half way down on the driver's side. It won't move any further. Upon further investigation, it looks like the TA was mounted in the wrong holes at the rear end. There are 2 sets of holes to mount the TA to the rear. Mine are mounted in the outermost holes, away from the pumpkin. I think they should be in the holes right next to the pumpkin. Is it as simple as unbolting the TA from the rear, pulling it away from the trans, and then mounting it in the proper holes at the rear? I have the rear end supported by 2 jackstands (loaded suspension), if that matters.

The other question is - how do you remove the TA from the trans bracket?? Its locked up like a jigsaw puzzle!

Does anyone even understand what I'm trying to say? Help!

I have the same TA, i dont even think u can use the second set of holes because the plate hits the differential housing before the holes line up.

You might want to try removing the tailshaft housing from the tranny, im sure this would solve your problem.

It sounds to me like you are trying to seperate the Torque Arm bracket from the transmission. This will not work. You need to seperate the Torque Arm from the Torque Arm Bracket. I am not familiar with the BMR setup, but I know for a fact that the bracket bolts are too long to slide out of the tailhousing, even with the crossmember removed.

Thanks for the tips...I may try removing the tailshaft housing. I see what you mean about the BMR bracket hitting the pumpkin...Nice design!

I still would like to know how to remove the torque arm from the torque arm bracket. Its like a bended clamp with locking tongs on it

Does it use the stock Torque Arm bracket? The stock bracket has a bolt at the top and it pivots down and the tang comes out at the bottom.

Yes! It uses the stock bracket. I will take a look at it, but all 3 of the long bolts that mount to the trans go through the extention housing. I don't see how to separate the top bolt from the bracket

Standing on the drivers side of the car, looking at the bracket, there is a bolt w/ a 13mm head to the lower right of the top "long" bolt. It is much shorter since it threads into the bracket itself instead of going through the tailshaft housing. Take that bolt out and the two halves will come apart.

"I see", said the blind man as he picked up his hammer and saw...I was working on it very late last night and only saw the 3 long bolts. My GM shop manual shows the shorter bolt as well. DOH!

Thanks so much for the online tech support! GMTech :hail:

UPDATE: The tranny is out! Once I found that extra bolt on the torque arm mount, the rest was cake. I did forget just how heavy the torque converter is....like 40lbs!

Anyway, on to the T5 install.
