Auto Tranny To Manual Tranny

I have a 85 camaro and i was wondering if anyone knows of an article to change a automatic transmission to a manual one? I need to know what i would have to do to do this. I know i will have to do some "cuting and glueing" but im wondering what i will be getting myself into before i do so. Also wondering how much it would cost to do so?

I was going to do it this winter until I realized it would be the only mod I could afford to do for the year if I did it properly IMO and used a TKO or t56.

Agreed.

I found it useful though to read the posts because of the problems people encountered - like don't rely on the pattern in the carpet to locate the peddles etc.

Alright i have read around for the past two hours and learned some stuff but i have a couple of questions though. I have a 305 and planning to put a rebuilt 350 in this summer

1. I have found out that a T-56 is probably better than a T-5 because some say that the t-5 goes out with only a 305. But im also on a tight buget so i dont really know which one would be for the better buck.

2. I am wondering what a PROM thing on the manual transmission is?

3. Would it be better to stick with the auto trans because in the past i have had the worst time with the 700r4. It gave me so much trouble i put in three different ones on my own (used ones) and they never worked. But reading some of the threads it is alot of work to convert my car to manual. So this question i need answered is it a good idea to convert to manual?

Next it where would be the best places to get parts for the convertion to manual?

I m relatively new at car things, but i have been forced to learn because i love my camaro and i would love to drive it by this summer. So if anyone has anything please let me know.

Ok...

1. Sure...the T-56 is stronger than the T-5...but costs a lot more...another option would be the Tremec TKO...You can also find these trans used, so that would be a good option.

2. There is no computer control on a manual trans. Changing the PROM means that you would need to change flag for auto in the prom so it knows that you have a manual...if you are swapping in a 350 anyway...this is not a big deal as you will need to change the prom and tune for the 350.

3. You have put crappy used transmissions in...you get what you pay for. Also, the 1st gen 700r4 (82-87) I believe, was a weaker design. The 88 and up had some fixes in them.

I would check out www.pro-built.net to see how they "fix" the 700R4 to handle some serious power.

I have a Pro-built and ACT convertor that would be going in my car if I hadn't found such a great deal on this Tremec TKO and conversion kit...

Lastly, it depends on how much you like a manual and what kind of driving you do...I have a long commute in rush hour traffic and have used both an auto and manual (in different cars)...both have their pluses...it depends on what you will be happiest with for your combo.

Too many variables Gentlemen. Cost depends on what you want to achieve... used or new tranny, flywheel, what kind of clutch etc. etc. etc.

It cost me between $2500-$2700 but that represents a bargain for what I did.

As far as swapping to a manual being a good idea, again, too many variables. Why are you swapping? Unreliable autos in the past? What do you want to do with the car? Bracket racing, road racing?

Really not trying to be a pain and I would be happy to answer any of your questions but at this level it is hard to do.

I can tell you that I have been having a blast driving the now manual GTA.

With some additional information, goals and parameters (cost, etc.) I think that members of this forum will be able to better answer your questions.

Later,
