I read somewhere on here that there a 4speed man, then u hit a button and it shifts into 3hidden gears. Personally I wouldnt trust something that has hidden gears and a man tranny that does an automatic shift. sounds like there could be alot of problems in the long run with them... Just my opinion though....

Those transmissions are a nightmare! Do yourself a favor and steer clear of the 4+3.

Well, it really IS a Borg-Warner Super T-10 4 speed transmission (a very strong tranny) and they attached an electric overdrive in place of the original tail housing. No "hidden" gears here!! And it does not do an "automatic" shift either. The OD gear is either in or out (on or off) and was controlled by a button on the shifter ****.
Since the button was only available in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears with OD on or off, then you had a 4 spd + 3 OD gears (4+3)

Shift positions available were:

1st
2nd
2nd w/OD
3rd
3rd w/OD
4th
4th w/OD

It's not really a bad tranny, but got a bad rap from the OD going out. I'm not sure that the tail housing was as strong either, possible cracking problems there. Check with a good, reputable transmission shop (several, in fact) Somewhere in the middle of all their stories will be the truth!

You might also want to check on the Corvette forums, see what owners of these transmissions have to say as well.

My friend SCCA races C4 corvettes using exclusively the 4+3. He is making about 400 hp and 450 lb ft of torque out of an L98. I can't remember him ever having a problem with a trans. It's great for road racing because you can flip in and out of overdrive without lifting and it does in effect give you 7 speeds. I have watched in-car tapes of his races and the trans makes rapid switches into and out of overdrive. There is a reason he hasn't switched to a 6 speed. Of course, he now mostly races the C5s but the C4s occasionally come out for an encore performance. Here is his site.

PonchoTA is correct about the shift positions.

thanks for all the replys!

so basicle the tranny is a good tranny. I just have to take the electronic tailhousing to a good tranny shop to get it beefed up.
sounds like a cool tranny. but heres the million dollar ?. well it fit in a third gen camaro.

The 4+3 is the worst tranny that GM ever made. I have a friend with a corvette with that transmission and it has had nothing but problems. He finally ended up just disconnecting the last two overdrive gears and only have one overdrive gear, so now it is a five speed. On top of that parts are a b@#ch to find for it.

Do those trannies have a provision for a crossmember? The Vette is IRS and has the rear end bolted to the bottom of the car.

The way I like to think of the 4+3 is a t10 with a powerglide behind it. The 4+3 is actually a very good tranny. The only "weak link" is the overdrive unit. These problems were addressed, and after a few small parts inside the unit were revised, and pretty much fixed by '86. As stated earlier, the t10 speaks for itself as well. I have a 377 in my '85 Z51 with no problems. Although mine is not an '86 or newer unit, as long as you stay on top of fluid and filter changes for the OD unit, you shouldn't have problems. And there is a company (the name slipped by me) that does a good job building these things for pretty cheap, if you should happen to have an older neglected unit. However, there are comparable and easier swaps than the 4+3, because it is a big unit.
