Here's a source I use alot...

The SLP take-off posi is the best deal going; however it's for 28-spline axles, and more than likely your 89 has 26-spline axles. There's no way to know that excapt to take it apart and look. 89 was the changeover year, and most were 26, but a few were 28. If yours are 26, then you can't use teh SLP posi without replacing the axles either with new ones or with 90-up used ones.
Another strategy would be to go looking for a 90-up 6-cyl car in the junkyard, those usually came with 3.42s, and drum brakes like what you have; and then just stick the SLP posi in it.

your best bet is to trash your stock axles and get a set of moser axles. They are a direct replacement for the stockers and an excellent value for under 300 bucks for a pair with wheel studs already pressed in. Also you should probably get a set of fresh gears because getting the proper pattern with a used set is very difficult if not nearly impossible.

These gears will work with any posi that originally came w/ a 3.23 or higher ratio. So if you have a 2.73 or a 3.08, it will not work. Best bet is to try to get a complete one out of a 4th gen. LS1 cars have 1" larger brakes. M6's came with 3.42's and auto's came with 3.23.
