Okay today at work i decided to change the differental fluid becuz i have no clue when it was changed last. so after the goo (gear fluid) poored out and everything was fine and notice i had no posi, so i decided to check the gears in the car. i marked the drive shaft (had car in nuteral (sp)) and then i marked the ring gear. i then turned the driverside wheel and as the ring gear did one full revolution i had my friend count how many times the drive shaft when around and he counted 3 1/4 times.

my questions are what gears are those? im think either 3.08's or 3.27's and it also said 13.42 on the ring gear if that means anything, i dunno.

and it is an open differental (sp), does havin the 3.08's or 3.27's if thats what i got mean i have a 3 series carrier? and if so can i just get a posi like an eaton or aubrn and it will bolt right up to the ring gear? also if i have a 3 seriers carrier or what ever what posi do u guys recomned to be a good one out of the box for the price? i know Eaton posis are like 400bucks.

 

hey man all you need to do if your cover is off is count the teeth on your ring and pinion gears and divide the two... i think you have 3.23 cause the number you saw "13.42", if you divide those it comes out to 3.23...hope this helps you out

 

yea that does help me out becuz since it went that 1/4 of a turn i figured okay 14 = .25 so i figured 3.27 but i forgot about the 3.23 gears. and it said these were GM gears. GM was stamped on the ring gear.

i dunno when ill have the cover off again, but probably not till i get a posi if all i need to do is get a 3 series posi/carrier.

 

so since im guessin i have 3.23 gears, which posi units should i look out for into gettin becuz i dont want to have the one peel wonder forlong since i found out i have an open rear and a nice set of gears in great shape.

if anyone can help there that would be kool, so i know what i should get and save for. becuz i wanna get a posi before i get a set of slicks.

 

eaton or auburn.....start looking on ebay if you want to save money...I picked up a brand new 3 series auburn for $180...I was skeptical at first but it was from a differential shop so I wasn't too worried....and now it's in my car and works great! Just make sure you buy from someone with a lot of ebay feedback and someone who has pictures.

do u have 26 or 28 spline axles? becuz i think its easier to find them for 28 then the 26 but ill give ebay a look and see if i find anything good. thanx for the tip.

 

Mine is 28 spline. Yes it is a little harder to come by 26 spline but if you do a search on ebay for "26 spline posi" there are two active auctions right now. It also helps to just look up "posi" and read through them all because not everyone puts the spline in the title.
