3.73's gears...please help me out!

Ok, I need some major help. I wanna put some 3.73's in my car, but know NOTHING about gears. I've never had to deal w/ them before so I don't know anything. I've looked up some gears on www.nationaldrivetrain.com...I clicked on Eliminator gears, and there was something called a "ring and pinion set"...is that what i need? for the 373's, it says Bow Tie Eliminator Gear Set 373 Ratio,GM 7.5/ 7.58 373 Ratio. Is this what I need or am I looking for something else? I am completely clueless when it comes to gears, so please help me out. If this is not what I'm looking for, any idea where I can find waht I need? And do I have to buy any accessory parts, or do I just buy the gears and take 'em to a shop to be installed? If you feel like going all out and explaining all you know on gears, please enlighten me. If not, any help at all will be appreciated. Thanks.

That should work. Most likely your rear has 3.23s or 3.42s.

You'll need a "gear install kit", which has all the bearings, and an assortment of shims. It would be wise to either get the "deluxe" kit which includes axle bearings and seals, or buy them separately; that way, every single bearing and wear part in your rear end will be new.

Now would be a good time to get a posi for it too. If SLP has resolved whatever the issue they had with teh take-off posi from LS1 cars, that's the way to go for a posi.... $99 for a basically brand-new clutchless posi.

A source I frequently use is www.drivetrainspecialists.com

I just found some stuff on www.thunderracing.com. The gears are $195 and the deluxe install kit is $130. There's a kit that includes these two thing, plus a rear end cover girdle, a stud kit, and some fluids for it for $460 but that's a little steep for me right now. If I just get the gears and the install kit is that ok? I don't need a new rear end cover girdle do I? What's your opinion on what I should do? If I really should get the full kit, I can scrape up the money, but keep in mind I'll have to pay for install too which wil add another $200 or so. Thanks.

Yes, get the gear set and install kit. I'd seriously consider getting a posi unit as well. As long as the gears are being installed, you should get that installed, too. If you don't have the money right now, then wait.
