ok im having major problems with my car ok basicly my trannie has a whole mess of metal shavings and it was partly from missing 5th gear (this is why i hate buying a used car) how hard is it to switch a trannie cuase im buying one from house of camaro for 600 and the guy wants to charge me 1000 bucks just to fix my transmition!!! and i really really dont wnat to pay for that beucase im really really tight on cash so i figgure i can do it myself for cheep (er) what would i have to do, it should be a direct swap but i heard getting it off the moter is a real big pain in teh butt, so any help woudl be great and anything i shoud replace while im uder there ? i heard fromt he guy that the mount and something else was shot what do you guys think?
Im assuming you have a T5 tranny in there.
Doing it alone........takes about 5-8 hours..with your garden variety tools.
First:
Remove console and shift boot and take out the shifter (the square plate with the rod coming out of it..most likely 13mm)
Steps after jacking car up and placing skyhigh on 4 or more stands and a jack as a backup:
-remove torque arm
-remove drive shaft...11mm socket to get spider end out first.
-remove transmission mounts
-support tranny with jack
-remove crossmember
-Unbolt slave cylinder from clutch fork using 10mm socket
-using SEVERAL extensions with smallest closest to bolt you want to reach (a couple 1 inches, a few 3 inches, and maybe a 6 in or 9 in) and unbolt the bellhousing from the block, i think these are 5/8 or 9/16 bolts.
-after all bolts removed, and after you disconnected 2 plugs from tranny...pull jack towards rear of car to disengage trans-shaft from the pilot bearing
-with transmission clear of block, lower it and pull out from beneath car
A bit easier is to take the tranny out in sections like just the transmission, then once that is removed, unbolt the bellhousing (clutch assembly).
Remember: A bit less headache if you bolt the bellhousing back to the transmission with everything aligned BEFORE you try to install the transmission.
A few necessary tools as well as what I've already mentioned.
-10mm, 11mm, 15mm, 16mm, 7/16, 9/16, 5/8 sockets..you will use these alot
-a 18 or 19 mm boxwrench to use as a breaker bar on tough bolts
Dont forget your gear oil and perhaps some motor oil if you want to do an oil change while your there, maybe replace your rear main seal.....oh yeah, good idea to replace your pilot bearing back there too...behind the flywheel.
good luck
