T-5 and computer question

i have an 86 camaro i want to convert to stick, was going to do a t-56 swap but got a free t-5. i've been reading a lot how the t-56 is much stronger then the t-5. my question is, can i have the t-5 rebuilt to hold up with my motor? i have about 400-425 horse. my other question is when i do the swap, can i toss my computer? my motor is carbed. thanks

you shouldnt need the computer in an 86, as long as your warning lights arent controlled by it...or any gauges.

the t5 is not exactly a great transmission

can it be built to handle that power? yes but it wont be cheap, and in the end you still have a poor quality trans case that is prone to flex and gear spread.

if your making that kind of power, you should really go with an aftermarket transmission. a t56 is nice and can handle quite a bit of power but they are usually prohibitively expensive.

I have a tremec tko and i love it, the tremec 3550 can handle the power your making and is a little cheaper, right around 17-1800 bucks i think. there are aftermarket t5's that are a little better, but in the end its a still a POS
