Replacing transmission

How difficult would this be? What are some of the key points of replacing a transmission?

Also, if I had a shop replace the tranny, what would be a good price?

Key points include removing the old transmission, followed by installing the new one.

$10 would be a good price. Not an average price, or a realistic price, but definitely a good price.

Doing some simple digging in the Tech Articles section will tell you what's involved in removing the trans. From there you can form an idea on whether you're interested in doing it yourself.

If you opt to have a shop do it, the price you'll pay is determined by doing some research w/ local shops, then selecting the best/lowest bidder. I can get hourly labor at $40/hr in some parts of the country, other parts it's more like $90/hr. Ballpark number for basic removal of old trans and installation of new one, no rebuild or cleanup, should be in the $200-$300 range in the less-expensive parts of the country.

If the old trans failed, you'll want to flush out the cooling plumbing (lines + rad cooler) to get the junk out before hooking up the new trans.
