9 bolt axle end play

I road raced my 305 formula this weekend at Road America and I have a question about the axle end play should be with the 9 bolt rear end. Before I raced the car I did not have any strange noises from the rear end. After the race (250 miles) I now have a clunk whenever I turn left. The clunk is coming from the drivers side axle, there is approximately 1/4 inch of end play in the axle when I puch it towards the center of the car and then pull it out like I am trying to remove it. The axle still spins smoothly but clunks when I push it back and forth. When I removed the axle and inspected the bearing and axle I could not see anything wrong. The tapered roller bearing is in good shape, it just seems to move back and forth quite a bit. The passanger side axle only has a 1/16 of end play but my spare 9 bolt rear end has the same 1/4 inch of end play on both axles. What is end play specification for the 9 bolt? What controls the end play number on this rear end? I am guessing that I wore something out on the bearing assembly but I want to know before I start replacing parts.
