Can shift points be changed?

I know only scattered things about transmissions, so if this is a fool question I apologize

Anyway: About 4,000 miles ago my stock 700r4 gave up and I had it remade better. The transmission is now freshly rebuilt with heavy duty cluch packs, shift kit, case saver, and custom machined torque converter w/ a bland stall of 1800. I like it alot, and it certainly performs waaaay better than the tired version ever did. However, even with the improved performance and shifti characteristics, one thing makes me ask if the shift points can be adjusted, because when I go WOT this is what happens...

1st gear slames you into your seat like it should and pulls nice all the way to around 5700rpm.

1st to 2nd shift is quick! & produces a cool tire chirp.

2nd is great, except that it allows the engine to rev into the red, about 6200rpm, for a disquieting 1-2 seonds before it shifts 2-3!

I can't help but feel this is robbing me of 2 or 3 tenths in the quarter mile, as well as spinning a seasoned l98 too fast for too long. Can the 2-3 shift be adjusted so that the transmission will shift at a more appropriate speed? I would like 5500rpm, I believe this would apropriate a better et, as well as give the poor 120k engine an easier time before it gets rebuilt. Forgive the long post, I am long winded sometimes.

It's not a silly question. The WOT shift points are designed to be controlled by a fly-ball style governer in the driver's side tailshaft of the tranny. There's an access cover that allows you to R&R the governer w/o dropping the tranny. B&M and others sell a kit that contains different weights and springs to change the shift points.

The thing is tweaking the governer changes both your 1-2 and your 2-3 shift points simultaneously. In your case you might be able to get 2-3 where you want but 1-2 could be a little low.

PROBUILT explained to me how 1-2 and 2-3 can be spread apart but I just can't remember the specifics of his answer. Why don't you drop him an email pointing to this post and ask him to reply with some specifics that you or your tranny builder can do to tighten up the spread between shift RPM?
