Reverse input drum cracked, a question?

Hello.

The trans in my 86 camaro (700R4) was supposedly rebuilt (according to seller) and was working fine, up until recently.

What happened: started slipping in 2:nd badly, but still retained 4:th gear.

Couldn't figure it out at all.

I took it apart to fix it myself since reman trans here in sweden is over $2000.

Anyway, from looking at all the casting numbers and date circles on my trans I understand that it is original 1986, part of VIN matches etc..

Turns out the reverse input clutch housing (drum?) is cracked/non conical etc.. therefor my theory is that the 2:d apply piston was bottoming in it's bore or so but not 4: piston, causing slipping 2:nd but 4:th was ok??

(After slipping started I drove the car very very very little)

I am now looking at the clutches in the drum to see if I can tell if they are new or not.

I can still read "Borg Warner" on the frictions, is that telling me the trans was rebuilt recently or do you see stuff like that also in older clutches. The trans would have more that 200K if it was untouched.

Just trying to figure out what is going on.

Also, what causes a drum to give up like this. the trans has been shifting firmly all the time I had it and also, trans fluid was red when I drained it but I found in the bottom of pan some black residue (2-4 band material?).

So, would it be safe to replace drum and band (and gaskets and filter) and go again?

Thanks.

Also, something I forgot to ask.

When I took out the clutches in the drum I saw they are different than what I have in my papers (manual printed from the mighty Internet)

I have, from out to in:

-Snap ring
-Backing plate
-Friction plate, with friction material on one side and steel on other side.
-Friction plate (regular w. friction material on both sides)
-Steel plate
-Friction
-Steel....
-
-
-Waved steel plate
-Friction.
-Thick steel plate (I think)

Why do I have a semi-friction plate in the "beginning" followed by a regular friction?

It also seems to be approximately 3-4 mm play in this pack. Correct or way too much??

Thanks again (feeling much like a true novice with this).
