tranny won't shift up!

tranny won't shift up!

Somebody help!

My 1985 305tpi z28 fitted with th700r4 won't shift out of first gear,pulls away fine but just won't shift up,any ideas?

On the drivers side of the transmission, all the way to the back of it, you will see a dome shaped cover. Pry it off and pull the Governer assembly out and see if the gear on the end is OK.

Something else you could check when you have the governor out is to make sure that the valve inside isn't stuck. Take the governor and hold it with the gear up and then press on the counterweights and make sure the valve inside moves up and down.

Transmission: Probuilt 700R4 - 2800 Stall Midwest
Axle/Gears: 3.42
My tranny was doing the exact same thing. I checked the governor and couldn't find anything wrong. I just pulled the transmission out and I'm currently waiting for my Pro-Built 700R4 to arrive. I hope you have better luck with the governor than I did. You have the same transmission that I had and unfortunately it was the worst 700R4 that was made. They were built much better in '86 and beyond.
