Hey guys, Well I knew it was coming My transmission lot drive and over drive this sunday. Husband and I have some questions about these things. Any way to take the transmission out without removing the whole engine? Or do you have to pull it out all together or cut the firewall? Also I guess I should say I have a 2.8 v6 camaro with a stock transmission. Any way a th-350 would fit even with the plate? Were either going to rebuild my crap transmission or if it would work get the th-350 since we going to turbo charge the car anyways. Anyone have any ideas or help tips?
You definitely do NOT have to pull the motor. It will be much easy to leave the motor in the car. Just remove the dipstick tube, torque arm mount, disconnect any cables that are attached, and remove the 6 bolts that mount the tranny to the motor. I'm not sure what tranny you have now but if it has a torque converter, remove those 3 bolts that attach it to the flexplate and drop the tranny out.
The Haynes manual said we had to remove tranny and motor mount at the same time since the top bolt was unreachable unless you cut a hole in the firewall or something. My husband has always taken them out the way you describe, but he has also always worked on v-8's :P
We are looking at a TH-350 using a adapter plate for the V-6. These trannys are supposed to be pretty weak as it is, so were really wondering if the TH-350 would even fit/ work.

The V-6 version is usually EASIER to pull than the V-8 tranny. The difficult bolt to get to is on a V-8. The V-6 bellhousing is smaller than the V-8, allowing more room to work!
As for the strength of you trans, the 700R4 is a pretty strong trans when properly built. I would venture to say as strong as the 350 turbo. The rear section is very similar the the 350, and there are updates that make the front section stronger.

By the way, it sounds like you had one of the common failures of the 700R4, which is the 3-4 clutch pack. There are several aftermarket solutions available for this!

What kind of aftermarket is out there ? Were looking at 20 psi of boost soon, so we may as well bulletproof the tranny now

You may wanna take a look at www.pro-built.net . They guy knows his stuff, and prices are good! The prices seemed a bit high to me at first, but after talking with Dana, I realized that he put together some really awesome kit's and complete transmissions. I plan to get most of my parts (if not all) from him!
Give him a call, his number is on his site, he'll tell you all you ever want to know!
