HELP?! Tranny HESITATES then shifts HARD from Park, Reverse, and Drive!

Hey,

1990 IROC-Z (350 - 700R4)

When I'm stopped with the transmission in Park, and shift to Reverse or Drive... there is a hesitation (pause) then when the transmission finally goes into gear, it jerks and shifts very hard. I just replaced the tranny mount (which DID fix a vibration problem) and adjusted my TV cable (which DID fix the EXTRA FIRM 1st to 2nd shift). I hear some 'rotating' sound when going at speeds above 5 MPH. The faster I go, the faster the noise gets. My buddy says that it could be the Universal Joints going out. He said it would account for the noise and the hesitation and firm shift into gear. Is this possible? Please, someone help... I've only had the car 2 weeks and I don't want something bad to happen

-Thanks

Check the tranny fluid. It should be a red color and not smell burnt. Also make sure its full. I believe the U-Joits will cause a clunk but I cant see them cause it to delay a shift.

Good luck

It's kinda hard to explain but it will smell like burning oil almost. If you know what auto tranny fluid should smell like, buy some new, and then smell yours, they should smell the same.

It's hard to explain but it will not smell like new fluid. I'd suggest buying a quart of fluid and comparing, they should smell the same.
