Can Someone Help Me Figure Out If This Is A New Moser Rear?
Can Someone Help Me Figure Out If This Is A New Moser Rear?
Today i went to look at a rearend i found in a classified. The ad read like This:
New 9" rear end for 82-92 camaros with 35 spline axles, Detroit Locker, 4.11 gears. Brand new also includes Wildwood break package, Cost $3500 new, never installed $2500 Bro
I called the guy and he said he has had alot of people look at and call but knowbody really seemed serious. He said he would go as low as 2000$. I Drove down to his father-inlaws house where the axle was located. When i saw it, it had the rotors on, but not installed and where rusty. The main carrier was also rusty. I was quick to notice that it apeared to be installed. It had marks on the housings like it was bolted on to something, and it apeared to have marks where the spring would have sat. However the yoke apeared to be brand new, and the callipers were definatly not used. I asked the guy if it had ever ben bolted onto anything and he insited that it wasnt. I was going to give him a 500$ down payment so he could hold onto it but i decided to change my mind and think about it. When he left he hinted that he would go as low as 1800$ Should i Buy it? i am going to call him back in 2 weeks when i have the money and have him unbolt the housing to see weither or not the breaks are shinney, which i was told means it was used?
thanks

Sounds to me like there's alot of things more important about it than whether it's been used or not.
First off, is it for one of these cars at all (or for whatever car you want to put it in); second, is it the right length; third, which brakes are on it. Then along with all that, is it really what he says (35-spine axles etc.).
What difference would it make if it was used? What do you plan on doing with it, that some prior use would matter?

It is for my 90 camaro. Im building a supercharger 383 and need a rear end to handle it. The breaks are wildwood Pro-Street. I did not look for any stamping, but i am going to call Moser Tomorw to find out where the markings would be.

I have the Moser in my car. If it is a detroit locker it will have 35 spline axles. On the other hand I would never run a detroit locker on the streets. The setup is 2300 new without brakes for the 31 spline limited slip. You will hop on corners because its a detroit locker. Also what gears are in it. In my opinion I would save the 2300 and get the setup for 82-92 Camaro/Firebird with gears that match your vehicle and limited slip posi. Mine runs great. Also on another note if you do NOT have a 9-bolt rear now, your rear brakes will work with the Moser rear. The 9bolts can work but its more trouble than its worth.

There should be the letters 'M E' on the end of the axles if it truly is a Moser package. Also you can get a Detroit locker in 31 splines...that's what I'm running in my Moser 9. You really should remove the axles and the pumpkin just to verify what he's selling.
