9 bolt whoas

havin a bang/clunk noise comin from my 9 bolt. depending on how fast i pop the clutch and push it back is determine how loud it is. basically it feels like i have a lot of play somewhere. so i pulled the cover off it tonight, to my surprise there was MAYBE a half a quart of fluid in it, no im not a dummy, i bought the rearend this way and i was to the impression it had plenty of fluid etc in it. so you can just imagine the thoughts of what is ruined in there. after cleanin all the sludge fluid out i checked the backlash it was .008 wich is within spec and actually tight! hmm so now im wonderin. i had my friend inspect the spider gears teeth that u can see through the inspection hole as i turned the wheel around and the teeth looked good not chewed or anythign. so i fill it up and take a ride still makin noise but feels nicer to actually have fluid and fresh posi additive in there. but i still have the slop. someone i know told me that because the posi is so worn this could be the reason im getting the noise that i have. this would make sense since my "posi" is pretty much a one tire fire. anyone have any insight to my problems

the noise sounds like a broken tranny mount, or possibly U-joints. as for the one wheel spin, if your sure you have a posi then it may be in need of a rebuild, check 9bolt.com for parts.

i have an energy mount, damn hard to break. also i drove the car 4 hours before i changed the rearends and there were no noises, so that rules out the driveshaft or tranny. the torque arm isnt loose neither is the LCAs or any other suspension member.

someone told me that cause the posi is worn that the preload on the spiders isnt really there any more thus causing the spider gears to walk back and forth a little, just enough play to cause what i have.

I'd just order a shim kit and shim the posi cones. It took me and my dad under 2 hours to do it with his lift, its not all that difficult just time consuming. It took a lot more time to pull the axles then it did to take apart the carrier and shim it. Once you get it apart you'll see what were talking about, the spider gears will have a lot of play in them if you have a decent amount of wear. The only thing that i can think that might make this noise is the spider gears jumping teeth, but I doubt it-you would have to have broken spider gears for that. If you think that its the problem and your posi is slipping more than it shouild i'd give it a try.

yeah nuthin is jumpin teeth in there. its just like if i go backwards then put it in first gear to take off its like clunk. kinda like bad u joints. i probably will shim it just for the tim being id really like to get a HD cone and new springs for it

does it sound like a loud bang kinda sound or like something is loose? if so then check the lower bolts on ur shocks. my friend is having this loud bangin/clanking noise only in gear kinda like how u discribed it. i was followin him home one day in my car and when he would go over a bump or go WOT i could see his shocks moving up and down and all bad things. i took alook under his car and twisted the lower part of the shocks and sure enuff they were able to be moved by hand.

so id say just check ur shocks that might be ur problem. and since u said u bought the rear end, maybe the bolts on the shocks are loose and u dont know.

my friend has a 9 bolt in his GTA.
