700R4 gone bad?

Well I was driving down the highway in hixville texas. Just a long starigt two lane highway. So I of course wanted to haulass lol. When my trans hit that last gear the rpms jumped like it was in neautral! I was like WTF! There was no pull just that crazy stuff. Friend says a clutch band is going bad... pff.. bro says 700R4s are junk. *sruggs* Well I do plan on ripping out my computer and going carberated.. so with that being done there is rumor I can just bolt up a turbo 350. So.. why cant I do that now with the computer? And what is that rpm jump? Just clutch bands going bad and not catching some gear in there? Thanx for the help if ya know whats up.

My 700r4 just croaked this afternoon

It was running fine, I thought. But on Saturday I took a drive out to the Rocky Mountains and on the way back it wouldn't hold overdrive on a 20* incline. Just kept downshifting to 3rd and holding 3500 rpm when it should have pulled that hill easy in OD.

Well, it has been "hunting" between gears a tiny bit over this last week. So I thought, "Either I'm imagining things or this tranny is starting to go ..."

This afternoon it all let go at once. No "ifs, and, buts or maybes." It just kicked the bucket and stopped working in all gears.

Blast, this 86 Camaro is going to be ENTIRELY NEW now! No kidding. The only thing that hasn't been redone is the short block 305. Thanks goodness 305s are virtually indestructible, eh?

Sitting Bull... '86? Trans pump probably ran dry, and everything burned up. If you drop the pan, cut the filter open and look for big metal chunks. (Problem was fixed for 87-up 700r4's).

700r4's aren't junk anymore then a TH-350 3-speed was junk when it first came out. "700r4's are junk" is just something that most people like to say. If they were such junk, nobody would be carrying parts for them anymore, nobody would be rebuilding them, etc... I guarantee that 30 years from now, people will be saying "Those UltraSuper4093202-8 speed trannies are junk.. you should throw a 700r4 behind it!"

Speaking of junk- how many performance TH-200C's are out there? Yep... hm... no more 200C? But the 700r4's still around? Hm...

Anyway, you're asking if you can drop in a TH350 while keeping your computer? Sure. The ECM will just expect to turn on the TCC (torque convertor clutch), and there won't be one there to turn on. Your engine will still run fine. You'll need the bracket for the torque arm, http://www.bmracing.com makes one, find it at http://www.summitracing.com (put "BMM-" in front of the part number). You'll also need a driveshaft from an 82-83 f-body with a - get this - TH200C 3 speed trans.

Yes, that is what my mechanic thinks too, the pump

He's tearing it all out tomorrow and taking it to his tranny guy for a rebuild. Is there a good replacement pump that will fix the problem on 86s?
