Manual to auto swap

Hello all. I've got a 85 iroc z. 5 speed borg Warner t5 with a 350sbc. I'm having nothing but issues with this trans and would like to change over to a 700r4 or a 350 turbo. Now my question is what all do I need to complete this job? Please help me.

Re: Manual to auto swap

I did this swap. You will need a radiator with a tranny cooler built in. I took mine to a shop and had them build it. I didnt need a different cross member or drive shaft. You will need to put a shifter in your console. And if you go with the 700r4, you will need a tcc locking kit. You will need tranny lines bent up. Also you will need the right speedo gears, or your speed-o-meter will be off. Its a lot of messing around. You may have exhaust clearances issues as well with your y-pipe.

If you arnt an experienced mechanic, this can be a real chore. Not saying you cant do it. But its a lot of messing around.

Make sure the tran that is going in is a good one. Hate to do all the work just to pull it out and have it built.

Again, for the money you will have into this, you may think about finding a older t56 or having your t-5 built.

What engine mods do you have?

Maybe find a t56 instead? or have the t-5 built up a bit.

Re: Manual to auto swap

It's a 78 Chevy 350 with an aluminum intake. Holley 650 double pumper mild cam. My trans was rebuilt with a new clutch also. Many problem I'm having is when I leave it sit over night and go to drive in the morning it will shift fine. But as soon as I get on the road it acts up like the slave cylinder is messed up. I've bled it and replaced it. I have plenty of fluid I can't get it to want to go in gear it's like hitting a brick wall.

Re: Manual to auto swap

Sounds like you just have a clutch problem. I would guess a bad clutch master since it works at first.

Re: Manual to auto swap

For what it's worth, my old '84 Z28 did not have a transmission cooler on it, and after it blew up twice within 13 months, the tranny mechanics then decided to add an auxillary cooler for the tranny, mounted on the front of the radiator.

Yeah, *one week* over and 600 miles under warranty and they denied warranty. 16 years ago and I'm STILL mad about it lol

Man, I'd give you everything you need, if you give me everything I need.

I really want to do the reverse swap. Tired of having this 350, and want a 5 speed.
