I can get a good deal on a T-5 from an 84 Trans Am 5.0 L that I'd like to put into my 90RS (currently automatic)
I've read the tech article on the swap, but what else should I know?
Will my speedo work?
Is the clutch likely hydraulic or mechanical?
Can I later do a retro to world class?
Anything else?

Thanks

The '84 T5 uses mechanical clutch linkage. It's also a non-WC T5, so while it's fine for everyday use, I wouldn't try powershifting or really beating the death out of it. Make sure you use a good clutch, and it should live for a while.

I can't help on the speedo info, as I don't know if the '90 F-bodies used mechanical or electronic. You should change the chip as well to a 5-speed chip.

the 84 car came with the hydraulic clutch actuator. But that's irrelevant, there's no difference in the transmission.

I have a 91 T-5 in my 83 car; there is no external difference whatsoever.

Yes your speedo will work, if you get a T-5 electronic VSS out of a TBI car. (TPI ones are different, specifically different pulses per mile)

If you get the whole setup out of the 84 car it will be hydraulic.

Yes you can swap T-5s around to your heart's content, doesn't matter whether they're 1st design or 2nd design, as long as they're all V8 ones.

Thanks for the input.
So as I understand the responses:

I do have to change the PROM to the manual version.
I do NOT have to change the ECM
I still need to hook up the clutch switch, and
I'll figure out the speedo thing later after installation....

Then my car should start and run ok (provided the tranny's good...which it is

BTW, the 84 Trans Am had a hydraulic clutch.

Thanks again for the advice.

also, be ready to buy a flywheel for a one piece seal block car, the 84 will have a two piece flywheel and won't fit on the newer car.

make sure you get the entire pedal assembly from donor car (not just the pedal itself), the pedal/bracket assembly will bolt right into your car.
