well i jus put a new tranny in my car, and when i bolted everything up, the shifter cable was all frayed. It jus unplugs from inside your middle console. Pull the console up, reach in and unhook the cable and unclip the clip by pushing on the sides. Then just push the rubber boot out the bottom for the car. Climb underneath, pull it down, from above the tranny, and unhook it from drivers side of the tranny. You can leave the bracket on, jus use some plyers and squeeze the clips together (same as top clip on the inside). Should only take about 5-10 minutes.

Good luck. Lemme know if you have any problems.

i've changed the shifter cable 3 times! i can also help alot... WHen you do it make absolutly sure that the cable is secure in the brasket in the console!! When i bought each cable, the clip wold not fit completely and would be loose and trans would not shift completely into park! i actually had to cut the clips to make it fit... but really not a hard job to do.

do everything that projectiroc said except you push the cable up into the car rather than pull it down and when you put the new cable in you start inside the car and lower it through the hole. the most difficult part is getting it into the bracket on the tranny and make absolutely sure that's in good condition and not bent or broken. my old bracket was broken slightly and I could never get completely into park.

Be prepared for some difficulties in gettng it into park for a little while. The new cable will be straight and stiff, while the old one will be nicely bent and formed to the angle it needs to hook up to the trans. In time the new cable will also "form" itself to these angles and shifting into park will become easier.
