torque converter wtf???????????

I have an '89 formula with a 700 R4 tranny on the interstate the torque converter locks and unlocks constantly. I have a 12" tranny fluid cooler. I know in the city I can disconnect the torque converter, but what can I do for it to stop the lockup on the interstate? I'm driving to South Carolina on Friday, please help!

My 700r4 used to do that constantly and it drove me crazy. The way I fixed mine was installing the B&M 3-4 downshift improver valve. You can get them from Summit, Jegs, etc. I haven't had a problem since. The only other thing I could think of would be the TCC solenoid has gone bad. I had that replaced on mine once though, and it didn't change a thing.
