Spedo gear change with electronic VSS

Hi everyone,

i am doing a gear swap this weekend, and i have tried searching, tried calling 2 GM dealers, and can't find the answer to my quesiton.

i have a 1990 RS T-5, currently has 3.08's, i am swaping in 3.42's. i need to know what speedo gears to get. the dealer says i have a Red-9tooth drive gear, but he can't tell me what the other gear is, and can't tell me what gears i need for 3.42's i was unable to find a clear answer during my searches, because it seems that there is a large set of gears, and a small set of gears ???

hopefully someone can help me...

thanks
John

You need a blue or purple 7-tooth drive gear and a white 20-tooth driven gear. I don't have part #s.

Large gears = auto trans
Small gears = manual trans

ok called the dealer back...

they show white as 19 tooth? a assume that is what you meant, or they are showing it wrong, because the next one they have is 22 teeth.

of course they don't have them in stock , guess i will have to call around more.

I have had a couple of them laying around that are white with various other tooth counts besides 19 (which is the right one for 3.73s) for VSS applications; however, the ones for cable applications are typically red.

Make sure your dealer person is looking up the right one for a VSS car. Have him look up something like a 91 Formula LB9 5-speed with G92, which will give you the 3.42 rear gear. Stay away from looking it up for Camaros because they used a cable system for many more years.

This is assuming that you have the VSS in the trans, not a cable to the dash and the VSS behind the cluster.

Maybe the others are discontinued.

You need a 20-tooth; as long as you can find a 20-tooth gear that will work with the 7-tooth drive, don't worry about the color. The VSS is color-blind.
