4 Speed Tranny Identification
My buddy just picked up a GM 4 Speed and is not sure exactly what he has.
The numbers that we found are:
Tranny Case:
Cast 3851325
Stamped 824P038451
Tail Section:
Cast 38436429

Is the reverse shifter shaft in the case, or is it in the extension housing? If it's in the case, it's a Saginaw.
If it's in the ext hsg, is the cover square, or is the bottom of the cover sort of curved (about like the front "straight" of an oval race track)? If it's straight, it's a Munci; if it's curved, it's a Warner T-10.
What size is the tailshaft? If it uses the same yoke as a Turbo 350, 700, T-5, etc., it's either a M-21 Muncie or a regular T-10. If it's the same as a Turbo 400, it's either a M-22 Muncie or a Super T-10.
If it's a Muncie, what's the countershaft diameter? If it's 7/8" it's the early model kind, if it's 15/16" or 1" (I forget exactly) it's the later model.
