camaro big block swap
camaro big block swap
OK, I got a few questions for whoever can answer them. I am planning on buying this camaro for $300 bucks that I found and doesnt have a motor and tranny. I am planning on getting that camaro within the next 2 weeks and I am planning on a total re-body and a diff powertrain and interior and alot of different things to go along with it. I know you can do a big block swap on these cars but the thing is is that I am not to familiar with the whole electrical side to the motors. The motor that I want ( Recon 496 stroker w/550hp ) does not come with a distributer or any other electrical units. So this is where the question comes in. What would you suggest for a complete electrical system. I was also wondering if I would need the stock ECU at all because of a different motor but if I were to get digital gauges where would they plug into and the tach to? I am also planning in the future to procharge this beast to achieve some real nice ponies!

Big blocks use a Chevrolet V8 distributor, just like small blocks do.
Temp gauge plugs into a temp sending unit, oil pressure gauge plugs into an oil pressure sending unit, etc. etc. No different from a small block V8. Nearly all of them are in the same place, within an inch or 2. After all, we are talking about Chevrolets here.
Tach plugs into the distributor. Since it's the same distributor as a small block V8 such as a 305 or 350, it will be the same wire, plugging into the same place, on the same distributor.
As far as a "complete electrical system", alot of what you would have to deal with, will depend on the car. i.e. was it a 6-cyl car or a V8 car, FI or carb, etc. I couldn't begin to generalize or guess about specifics without knowing stuff like that.
