My T56 also whines really loud......I am thinking its a little more beat up than the guy that sold it to me lead me to believe.

My biggest noise though is the banging noise coming from my Spohn crossmember and torque arm hitting the floor over bumps.

My T56 was quiet all the time. If you have a whine either something is wrong with the tranny or you might have a bearing of some type going out. Does it whine all the time? With clutch depressed or out? Any specifics?

i was informed that when you go to an aftermarket shifter.....it translates more noise there fore the loud whine...the trans i have shifts great and gives me no trouble...my friends NEW bullit mustang started to whine loud after a shifter change as well as my friends 93 z...so i am guessing its just that...the solid base of the shifter and such

I have an aftermarket shifter, no problems here. Maybe ask in a 4th gen forum or something, I've never heard of it whining like this though.

Are you sure the whining is coming from the tranmission?

I have heard about the rear end whining extremely loud once a t-56 gets bolted up.

mine only wines when im downshifting into 1st slowing down. but thats normal with a tranny spinning that fast. (i dont let go of the clutch but the internals of the tranny still spin fast.) other then that my T-56 is silent. except when im in neutral and idling. then its the noisest dang thing iv ever heard!! i swear if im idling in neutral with the clutch engaged, it sounds like i have really bad bottom end knock, but its coming from the tranny, and as soon as i push the clutch it stops..

Could it possibly be the throwout bearing?

Possibly could be
1- Pilot bearing
2-Throwout bearing
3-Input shaft bearing

Yeah, the T-56 did that with the stock clutch setup. Mine does it too. One of my friends has a 4th gen and it rattled from the factory, they put a new clutch in under warrantly and it still did it. Then, they replaced the pressure plate and it went away.

Same here, it went away for a while when I swapped in a McLeod disk and GM LT4 pressure plate but eventually the idle rattle/knock returned.

Just a nuisance, not a problem.

I have the idle/clutch out/in neutral rattle but other than that mine is quiet. I have a Pro5.0 shifter......

My T56 whines around 45 to 65 mph under acceleration. I'm guessing one of the bearings is going bad. It still shifts nice.

When I first put in my T56, it would whine/rattle really bad at any speed, and at any rpm with or without the clutch engaged. It would be louder with rpm, but at idle it was still there. It ended up being a bad throwout bearing.

After a new $100 throwout bearing, you can just barely hear a faint whine when I have the A/C off and the radio off. Otherwise, you can't tell.

My throwout bearing makes a little noise in neutral with the clutch engaged also. It's just the way it's set up, with the fingers surrounding the bearing....the shift fork vibrates a little and the bearing contacts the clutch fingers.

I ran into one guy who had a really nasty whine while driving....but it went quiet in 4th. Turns out somebody had rebuilt it and not set the endplay on the input shaft correctly...there was too much slack in the bearing that rides in the back of the input shaft. It went away in 4th gear because 4th isn't an actual gear...it's a direct connection between the input and output shafts, so that bearing wasn't rotating.

So if the whine goes away in 4th you have internal problems.

Absolutely, but you'll need a conversion flywheel. The Centerforce part# is 700107 IIRC.
