T5 being stoopid. Need help fast.

This is gonna be kinda long but here it goes.

I recently scored a t5 from a junkyard and the thing is friggin beatuiful - red atf poured out (all over my face i might add) and the gears and such are so new I can still see machining marks on them. there isn't a sign of wear anywhere inside it. To discover all of this I took it apart (and also tried to put a diffrent inputshaft into it - didn't work). the problem is that now that I have it back to geather I am having trouble getting it to go into the gears. with the shifter off it will go inte each gear (with some work - trans still empty this a prob?) except for the one in the top center position - the X below. With the shifter on it becomes really goofy and I can't really tell if all the gears are there or not.

Any help would be greatly appriceated as my other car blowded up and the bird is an eaiser fix. in fact all I have to do is get this stoopid tranny working and I can bolt everything else up.

you could have messed up the shift rod to forks alighnment but, being it goes in to the other gears , I would guess that since you tried to put a differant input shaft on it you were messing with the 3rd and 4th gear syncro assembly and should give that area another good check over

I did goof up that syncro but I fixed it - It worked just fine with out the top cover off. Infact everything appeared to be working fine till I put the cover back on. It is just really difficult to get into and out of gear.

Did you try rotating the input shaft while you were shifting it?

Did you try what I suggested? If so, what happened?

Right now the trans in in the car. All I have left to do is bolt up the drive shaft and fill it with fluid. I will figure out if it works when everything is together (might not be the best way to do it)

BTW I brokeded everything... clutch trans and all of the hydrolics

sounds to me like you didnt get the top cover on properly...did yuo make sure the sliders were between the gears? (tranny in nuetral)....did you get the shifter forks aligned correctly...what about that little pin over the reverse lever....
if it worked before you put the cover lid on..doesnt that kinda give it away right there....

and no...it being empty of fluid will not cause it to do that
and no...the input doesnt not have to be turned...itll help a little but itll still go into gear..
how does it go into 4th from 3rd?

im thinking you missed on the 3-4 shift fork....
the shift forks arent tied together so its possible to get the 1-2 aligned but miss on the 3-4....i know because i missed the first time i did it...
how does it go into reverse from both neutral and 5th...like a 6 speed.....

if everything was working like it should like you said...and it messed up after you took the lid off....then id be leaning towards the cover lid...

I am thinking i missed the 3rd 4th shift fork too - Put the tranny in the car and it was locked. Took it back out and the 3rd-4th syncro is ****t up good.

also when i spin the input shaft the out put spins too. This is with the top cover off.It looks like 5th is engaged and I don't see how to disengage it.

I have pics if that will help.

BTW I just bought a $200 beater today so I have some time to work on the car.

turn the input while holding the output...

the output will turn when its in neutral...but when you hold the output itll stop...if its in neutral...

and what do you mean by the 4th synchro being messed up?..
if it doesnt slid back and forth fairly easy...then the 3 little keys around the synchro hub arent aligned properly..

the synchro rings hold them into place...and if it wasnt aligned to begin with then the slider wont move at all....

now it sounds like you got the lid on right...but the 4th synchro slider is goofed up...cuz you should be albe to mave them back and forward very easily...

pics will probly help

The slider thing is jammed all the way to the front and the little thingies are popped up. I know how to fix that. ONce I get that syncro fixed I will see if the holding the output will keep the thing from spinning.

As my last post wasn't very descriptive here is a picture. You can see how the slider is engaging a gear (4th?) and the inserts have popped up jamming the slider in that gear. Can this be caused by the slider being pushed too fat forward? Is there any I can fix this with out pulling the syncroniser assmble off of the output shaft? I am at my wits end (I broke 2 tools today) any help would be appriceated.

i dont think so dude...the key has to go under the blocker ring...(that brass thing)...the synchronizer ring slid up when the slider was put on the hub causing the keys to pop out...

your gonna have to pull it out...

when you put it back together, put a rubber band around the hub, over the keys..so when you put the slider on , that snychro rings wont ride up..when they do that the keys will pop out..

it happens..use the rubber band this time...and when you get the lid on go through all the gears...
