need help fast

I need help and fast. I went to get gas and then I tried to start it and nothing. At first I thought the battery was dead or the alternator. Then I had a friend jump it. I had power and I tried to start it and all I heard was clicking around the distributer. I guess it is the starter, am I right? Rigth now im parked at a texaco in a bad neighborhood so I need help fast. Anything that might be wrong that I can get it fixed quickly? Help me....

do starters die spontaneously? ive never had one go on me, but i guess they could do that. you could have very well got water in the tank, but i'd think that it run a little , or at least till it burned the gas in the lines(which isnt much, but it should start). water is, as im sure you know, heavier than gas, but it could be the starter. first thing i'd do is get that thing the hell outa dodge before someone tries to gank it

Starters have to die sooner or later. One time they will operate, and the next time they won't. Usually that is at the least opportune time, too.

If you have a manual trans, turn on the ignition, get it rolling a bit and put it in third gear then let out the clutch slowly. If you have an automatic, try tapping on the solenoid and starter motor with a small hammer. This can dislodge a stuck solenoid contact disk, of free up a stuck starter motor brush. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't. If it does, get it home and plan on a starter change A.S.A.P.
