About to install T56. Any last minute suggestions.

Well, I think I have all the stuff I need now. This is going in my 85 trans am w/ 700R4. I have the trans and everything from the donor car. I have a centerforce clutch and B&M ripper shifter. I have the centerforce flywheel for 2 piece rear main seal blocks(cost me fuggin $353 or something shipped). I also just recieved my MBA billit alum shifter ball(anodized black w/ firebird pheonix engraved) , my spohn crossmember, and SGI 5 box. I plan on mounting the trans up temporarily so I can mark where the hole needs to be for the shifter. I will then take it down and cut it the size of the one in the donor car. Any suggestions on what to cut it with? For the master cylinder I plan to mount the pedals up there and drill the mounting holes. I then will probably use a hole saw to cut the hole for the master cylender rod to come through. I think the SGI 5 box seems pretty straight forward. I have read the manual on line and dont think it will be a problem. So, any suggestions are welcome. I cant wait to get this thing in. I am going to try to get the 700 out in within the next couple days so I can spend the hole weekend putting the new trans in. Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks

Ben

Suggestion: Don't try to bench the trans up into place. It's too heavy.

Also, find the torque specs and follow them closely. It's real easy to overtorque stuff and strip the threads out of the aluminum case.

You did get the torque arm mount with the T-56 didn't you? Very important.....

I have a decent jack and friends to help get the tranny up in there so I dont think that will be a problem. Also, I am pretty sure I have the torque arm mount. If for some reason I dont it is at my cousins house because the torque arm was still attatched when we took it out. For the torque specs I will do so. You didnt have a bad experience with that did you?

I had to put a heli-coil in one of the case-bellhousing bolt holes when the guy who was helping me stuck a 1/2" drive ratchet on the bolt and heaved......needless to say he got demoted to handing me wrenches.

LOL. I would have been pissed. Thanks for the heads up though.

As far as the 700R4, yes it worked and only had about 10,000 on it since rebuild. One thing though is that the lock up stoped working on the torque converter. I tracked the whole system(computer, wiring and switches) and it was fine. I could manually engage the lock up solenoid and the lock up wouldt work I even engaged the solenoid with the pan off when we were trying to figure it out and you could see it engage(of course I didnt think to try this till after I replaced it so it has a new one anyway). Anyway, it had a 3000 stall so it really needed the lock up, but I tried to stay off of the highway with it till I could get it fixed. It turned out that it was actually the clutch in the converter. Well it was like this for 3 weeks(had the pan off of it 2 weekends in a row) and then it stopped working completely. I am pretty sure it is the converter that stopped working but really could not guarantee this. It would make since since it was not locking up. I figure it just burnt its self up by not locking up. I just drained the fluid out of it tonight and didnt see any metal or anything like that though so that is a good sign. Anyway I have a guy within driving distance that might want it, but I dont know for sure. I really dont have the time to crate it up(especially since I am doing the six speed swap) so it would probably be pretty expensive to ship. It has been rebuilt with a B&M rebuild kit and shift kit. It has the corvette servo, and .500 main boost valve and the .296 Intermediate/Reverse boost valve. When it stopped working it stopped working in any gear so I am pretty sure it is the converter. I was driving and I got on it to pass someone and I took off pretty good, but then a couple seconds later it free reved to about 6000 rpms and and hasnt moved its self since. You might ask someone that knows more about transmissions to make sure that they think that it was the converter and that nothing else would be damaged, but the fluid looked like new when it came out. It was ran on normal fluid about the first 5000 miles since rebuild and then on mobil 1 synth the last 5000. If you are interested and willing to pay to have it shipped or something, let me know and I will find out for sure if the other guy wants it.

Oh, yeah, the pic is the second time I had the pan off to try and get the lock up working. It doesnt really show anything special other than I actually did have it appart working on it, just thought I would post it.
