92 Formula

Gents,

I just found this site and it's awesome! Thanks to the creator and the moderators.

I have just a couple of minor questions about which I'd appreciate any opinions.

1) I just bought my 92 Formula, 305 TPI, automatic, 50,000 miles, and the only mods that I know of are a performance chip and a matching Hypertech thermostat to run cooler. Seems like it runs between 160 and 170 degrees. The thing is it seems to idle kinda rough and the RPMs even surge a little while it's sitting in neutral (moves up and down about 200 to 300 RPMs), but it runs just fine when driving it. I was told that this was just a side effeft of the performance chip. Is there any way to smooth out the idle?

2) That friggin' GM, rear end "clunk"! I've owned an 86 TA, a 92 Camaro RS and now the Formula, and they have ALL "clunked" in the rear end when put into gear and often when slowing down and the tranny downshifts. I've always replaced the rear end grease but it never really solves the problem. Could it be the universal joint(s), or is this just "nature of the beast" kind of stuff that I have to live with?

Thanks very much for any input!

Duh. I should've looked back at some of the other posts since the infamous "clunk" has been discussed many times. Sorry. And I'll repost my performance chip/rough idle question on a different tech board rather than this tranny board.
