Valve in TH700 causing lock-up / converter failure? HELP!
Well, I've been calling mechanics all day. I stated in a previous post that my tranny keeps wanting to DRIVE, even in Park and will usually stall the car if I stop. It shifts fine while driving, but hassles me when idleing. This is the info I got:
Mechanic #1: "Your converter is screwed and you have to do a complete rebuild" Cost: about 1300 dollars (you read that right...this is in Europe...)
Mechanic #2: "Your converter is screwed but you DON'T need a rebuild, just a good cleaning" Cost: about 800 dollars
Mechanic #3: "It probably isn't your converter, but a VALVE in the tranny oil pump is sticking...but I do have a converter lying around in case it should be that" Cost: about 200 dollars to fix the Valve (with labor) and 200 dollars (+labor) if its the converter.
OK...so can anyone around here tell me if a sticking valve can actually be at fault? All the mechanics seemed knowledgable and I'm not getting any bad vibes from anyone. I'm thinking maybe I should give #3 a chance...he should be applauded for not jumping into the most expensive solution right away, and he WAS recommended from two sources...
What do y'all think?
