Does this sound like a trans issue?
OK, right off the bat, I'm fairly ignorant in the ways of automatics, so bear with me.
Here are my symptoms:
The car won't shift outta first at full throttle, and won't rev past 4000. It hangs for about 2 seconds, then shifts VERY firm. Sometimes it'll chirp the tires into 2nd gear. It's not a sloppy shift, once it decides to shift.
Under normal driving, the shifts have become very soft, almost every time it shifts. Every once and a while it'll gimme a good ole firm shift like I'm used to.
Every now and then it'll feel just like a straight drive that's slipping.( I know for sure what that feels like) I'm assuming there's no reason an auto can't slip the same way right?
The trans has about 170,000 so age can certainly be the cause.
I had some motor issues as wll, but they are taken care of. The motor itself is now running fine.

have you recently removed your carb or messed with the throttle valve cable? what condition is your fluid in? smell burnt or dirty? might be a stuck valve or dried o-rings. have you ever serviced the oil and filter.
