setting gears up myself??

Hey guys I got my old 10-bolt today and cleaned it all up and primered and spray painted it gloss black. It looks amazing by the way lol. Well I pulled one of the axles out to check the spline count and it was 28 so I am good to go there. I want to order the SLP posi unit for 100bucks and a set of richmond 3.73 gears for the rear alog with a instalation kit. Well I saw a kit in Jegs for setting up ring and pinnions for 100bucks so I started thinking mayeb i can do it myself and save a few bucks. What do you think? Is there set numbers to follow and set things at or do you have to just be able to tell?? thanks guys

torque specs and preload are "hard numbers" that don't change, pinion depth and back lash are marked on each gear set. you're kidding yourself if you think a 100 dollar tool kit from jegs is all you need. ron terry has a more complete list of everything required for setting up ring and pinion gears. maybe you could PM him and ask about it.

Pinion depth is one thing. Backlash, preload, and wear pattern are other things. They all have to be right.

My brother did his latest gear swap himself and got really lucky.
I'd recommend paying someone to do it, and only if they are reputable with gear swaps.
