Ihave two t-5 tranny's with problems, please help.
Hear is my situation, I have an 84 Z-28 with the L69
and a 5-speed.
I have two tranny's for the car, but both have problems, which one should I make an attempt at rebuilding,
or maybe someone could point me in the direction of what is wrong with them.
They are both non WC 5-speeds.
The first tranny is out of the car.
The problem with this one is that the trans whines in every gear except 4th. It still worked when I took it out of the car.
The second tranny is still in the car.
The problem with this one is I suddenly lost 5th gear in it.
I just rebuilt the motor and this tranny was the replacment, so I hadn't run it yet.(supposedly the trans had just been rebuilt when I bought it from a private party)
While I was driving up the road in 5th gear at about 40 to 45 MPH everythins sounded and seemed normal then all of a sudden without a sound or a warning 5th gear dissapeared.the shifter never even moved. I shifted to fourth no problem. One the way back something started banging the underneath of the car when I got the RPM'sup and stepped on the gas.
all gears work including reverse, except for 5th. None of them make any noise at all. Reverse would grind ocasionally when going in, but if I shifted into fith first, then reverse it wouldn't grind.
A mechanic freind said the problem with the first tranny is probablya bad synchroe, and the problem with the second tranny is that a snap ring may have come off.
I'm debating on which tranny to either have rebuilt, or if it may be something not that bad, buying the book from 5speeds.com and doing the rebuild myself.
Any suggestions on what might be wrong, advice on what action to take, or comments in general will be gladly accepted.

From: out of my mind; be back in 5 minutes....
Car: 1989 Firebird Formula
Engine: Internal Combustion
Transmission: Completed
Axle/Gears: ones that turn.
The problem with the first trans (the one out of the car) is the countershaft bearing surface has gone bad. The only way to fix it is with a new shaft and bearings at a cost of ~$200, give or take.
The trans in the car sounds like a snap ring or something let go...should most definitely be easier and cheaper to fix; could probably use the parts from the first trans to repair it.
