ring and pinion

I read an article about servicing a 9 bolt LSD on Thridgens.org Technical Atricles. In the article, step number 7 says, and I quote "It is not necessary to remove the ring gear, however if it is to be removed it should be marked prior to disassembly for proper re-alignment." Now I heard that installing gears was a complicated job, and the proper back-lash must be set exactly. Now, if I install a different set a of gears in my rear-end, can I just mark where the pervious ring and pinion were, or does that only work when the your re-installing the olds gears, like in the article?

i'd like to see all of the piece you read. it doesn't make sense to me. the ring gear is flat on the mounting surface and not indexed in any way. if it mattered then it'd be doweled in place then bolted. there isn't anything or any way to mark where your old gear set is, or was, to referance when you install new gears. just do the install like your manual says. set pinion depth, preload, and back lash and you'll be good. setting gears isn't complicated or even real hard to do

So do most service manuals give directions on installing gears? Do you know any manuals or can you suggest one, I currently don't have one. And the article was in the Technical Articles if you want to read it.
