posi/non posi rear ends,,, Im new to them can someone help me.
Ok this is the think i want a posi for my 87 iroc. Im not sure if it came with one but i know it one wheel peels like 95% of the time...I hate it. I was told my rear gears where changed to 3.23, and seeing the silicon on the rear end cover makes that sound accuate. so i have a few questions about rearends.... before i go messing my mine right now.
1- What are the chances that i got a posi with worn out clutches?? (when I jack up the car i spin one wheel the other goes the opposite way) I do know how to identify a posi after i take of the cover but i dont want to do that just to cheak it out.
2- If my rear gears where changed is that a seperate piece then the posi part so regardless if gears where changed then it wouldnt of effected if its still a posi or not??
3- If i find out i dont have a posi,,,what should i look for in getting one??
4- If i do have a posi with clutches that are wasted how do i change em and is it expencive??
Thanx if anyone can help out....Im just not farmiliar with what all rear ends came in our cars and to identify them well.
Jeff
p.s. Im showing a M39 factory rpo code - borg warner 77mm 2.95

With a POSI rear both tires should turn the same way, an open rear will spin one the opposite way. I have bought an Auburn Posi unit and a Zexel Torsen from SLP. The auburn unit was very expensive and the Zexel Torsen was only $99 and if I buy another one I will definitely get another one from SLP it actually looked stronger to me than the Auburn. I am no expert just trying to help.

You need to pull the cover and look. A badly worn posi will cause one tire to turn the opposite way. Pull the cover and look, then you will know for sure. You could also verify exactly what gears you have.

pos trac will turn the wheels the same direction. to find the gearing just pull the rear cover and somewhere there should be a stamp. divide those two and that will tell you the ratio of the rear end. the posi trac should also have a metal tag attached by one of the cover bolt saying it is a posi trac as well
