The rear will, but the brake lines won't. Early cars, 82-83, had different brake line fittings.

Your topic does say it all, but what are you trying to do? Most third gens came with a ten-bolt axle. Do you want a stronger axle? If you can find a Dana 44, it is a great axle. The 9-bolt isn't as strong, but they are easy to find. With that said, Miles has a 427 feeding in to a nine-bolt.

Even if you don't want a stronger axle, I can't see any reason to replace a ten-bolt with a ten-bolt when you can install a 9-bolt. I'm going to replace my ten-bolt with a 9-bolt. If you are going to make any performance mods, ditch the ten-bolt.

Having thought about it, I'm editing this to add a "yes, but..." The 9-bolt will work, but there are other parts that need to be changed (if you are going from a ten-bolt to a 9-bolt). When I add my 9-bolt, I'm going to change to PBR calps, so I will have to have brackets to hold the PBRs, different brake lines and a different e-brake cable. There may be other parts, but that's all I can recall as of now.

How much power will the stock rear end take before it grenades? My new crate engine puts out 417ft. lbs. @ 5200 RPM... I'm not gonna lose the rear end any time soon, am I? Because I need to save for a new transmission

I'm going to have to pass on this one, because I have no idea. How long that axle is going to last depends on a variety of factors, including the kind of tires that you are running in the back. Why don't you shoot an e-mail to Miles with that question. Include as much info about your car as you can.

Right now I have some crappy Falkens, but come Thanksgiving I'm going to have a new set of BFG G-Force KDW's on the car. I have never run slicks, and I never will-- so I don't think I'll have enough traction to blow it up?

yes all third gens are interganable like they about the brake lines just steal em off a car at the juck yard or make new ones a stock rearend will take some abuse for awhile mine spit part of the spider gear out the back cover but i beat the **** out of mine alot of street racing ,burnouts and doing dounuts so hurry swap trannies and hope your rear dont go before you change something to look into is a 99 or newer f-body rear in yours thats what i want to do still waiting to hear if it just bolts in or gotta reweld brackets

The late-4th gen "LS1" rear will bolt right in but it's almost 4" longer than the 3rd gen rear so you'll need wheels with a 4th gen offset or your tires will stick out a little. Also it's still a 10-bolt so don't run too much power through it wth slicks.
