T.O.B. situation

okay, my car is in the shop due to an improperly instaled throw out bearing(wasnt sure thats what it was till after i put it in the shop). after i told the mechanic which way to install it(fork and clips inside the T.O.B. groove) he said with the tranny out they tried it to see how it reacted. he said when his assistant pushed the pedal and the T.O.B pushed in on the pressure plate fingers that the clips poped out of the groove and back around the collar of the T.O.B(to the improperly installed position). i cant imagine how that is possible though, but thats what he said happened. the guy i bought the car from had the T.O.B in wrong and said he put it back the way it was when he put a clutch in meaning that whoever had the car before him put it in wrong too. could it be that after being driven for so long with the T.O.B in wrong that the clips have been stretched and worn out causing them to come out of the groove and go back around the collar of the T.O.B? if so could i fix it by bending them in and down? i need my car back something fierce, and dont wanna wait on a new fork nor pay for one. it seems immpossible that that could happen(the clips coming out of the groove and back around the collar) too me. what do you guys think? please help, i need my baby back!!!

They are a spring. You're supposed to have to compress them a little to get therm to go in right. That's the main reason why people botch that task; they act like they naturally want to go in the wrong way rather than the right way, and those who don't know what they're doing don't realize that they've screwed it up.

Sounds like his helper is brain-dead, and needs closer supervision, to keep him from sodomizing himself with his skull on the job.

Putting them in wrong doesn't hurt them, because it bends the spring metal so little; actually, it would tend to tighten it, which would make it do its job better. But, a new fork is like $20 at the dealer, so it's no big deal if you want to replace it just for peace of mind; but most likely not necessary.

btw, if installed properly then there is no way the springs can work themselves to the back of the collar then, right?
