Removing rear axel seals

Ok.. I'm trying to work on a Ford 9" and get the stupid seals out. For some reason I can't figure out the best way to do this. I know that removing the seals in any rear should be about the same.. so how do you go about removing them from any kind of rear? I guess a puller of some sort would work.. but I don't have one. Are there any other ways to do it?

Take out both axles. Use a piece of about ¾" or 1" electrical conduit about 6' long; stick it through, and just knock it out.

I've removed axle seals and rear tranny housing seals just using a big old screwdriver on edge - pry with the side of the screwdriver rather than the flat face of it. If the seal starts to break, that's ok - if you can get vice grips on part of it as it breaks you can usually pull it right out. Only word of caution is just watch that you don't damage the axle face behind the seal - it'll leak if damaged.

The best thing is one of those talon-looking seal pullers - I'm sure you could find one at any parts place.

Good luck

I bought a slide hammer to take my axels out but perhaps there are places where you live that can rent you one. It made the job a breeze until I realized my Borg-Warner had pressed on bearings.

Thanks for the help.. the thought of going through the other side crossed my mind, but I never really thought about it. I'll look around and find some sort of long bar to get at them.
