Rear Axle Side to Side Slop

Ok, I dont get to drive my camaro very much as I bought it for someone else to drive. Today while driving I notice when I hit large bumps, I get a loud clunk noise.

After getting home and inspecting I find that it is very large axle slop side to side. I can pull on both axles and get about 1/4" play. I know your sup to get like 1/16 play, but not 1/4!!!

My "old school" dad/hot rodder says that a clip in the axle has either broke, wore out, popped loose, something.

Does this sound right for these axles?? Is this something I can fix in one afternoon? I DO NOT want to swap whole gears, or whole axles. I just need this car fixed to last atleast 6 more months then I can take it down and fix/rebuild anything I need right. I just need it fixed ASAP and back on the road NOW!

if the c-clip was broken or fell off, the axle would come out when you pulled on it......its posible that the brakes are the only thing holding it in

heh, id have someone pull the cover off and look at it ASAP..

your axles are only held in by these TINY C-clips.... if they did break off.... well be glad you have disc brakes.... they're the only thing holding the axle in the axle tube....

No disk breaks, drum.

I tugged on it quite well, didnt want to come out.

I had it up in the air today, its not moving a 1/4",, but it is moving more then it should and bangs.

Anyone got a part # for these c-clips?? I'm going to get 2 of them, and 2 wheel bearing kits and have at it.

I think I'm having this problem too. Are C-clips the only thing it might be? I don't want to dig into this rear end, 2.77(2.73?) posi drum. Completely worthless not has no value whatsoever....

Mine use to do that. Also when I would burn rubber, the mark would have 'waves' at the inside and outside of the front print the whole lenght of the mark

I upgraded the rear with new yukon axles, powertrax locker, etc etc. I used my dail calipers on the C clip slot on the axles (new and used) and found my stock axle C clip grooves had worn bigger.

Now with the new axles, everything is tight. No waves in my tire footprints

c clips may be worn, or grooves in the axle shaft ends

pull cover and check this out

if anything you could try different clips and shafts out until you eliminate most of the slop

but some is normal

the pinion shaft in the carrier prevents the shjafts from coming inwards towards carrier and therefore allowing the clips to drop

so if you push in on shafts and clips dont fall out then youre fine

good luck

Jay,
I have new Moser axles on order right now. They will be here in a week or less. New they coist me just under $300 with the flanges drilled for lightness. They are also drilling the bolt pattern to the .568" arp stud size I need so I can press in my own aftermarket 1/2"x 2.970" studs.

I have one very slightly bent rear axle on the passenger side that also has some excessive runout. Stock replacement axles from GM were going to cost me about $130 ea + shipping so I went to Moser for a lighter weight setup and stronger alloy.
