'92 'bird, 350, A4.

In 1st gear, when I press on the gas, it takes a split second for the car to actually move.

Also when it shifts into 3rd, there's a split second between when 2nd gear disengages and 3rd engages. shifting to 2nd gear is crisp and fast.

This normal, or do I have a problem? Previous owner supposed rebuilt the transmission about 15,000 miles ago.

have you checked the oil? make sure it's full and not over filled. you might want to try adjusting the tv cable too
